The TDR reading / Architecture review

Keep an eye on the horizon

Magnin’s Reno foothill house finds its character in long lines and deep edges.

Amos Residence stretches out beneath low rooflines, bringing the eye toward the surrounding terrain. In the ArrowCreek setting, that horizontal emphasis feels purposeful. The broad overhangs give the building a distinct edge between enclosed rooms and the exposure outside.

Stone, cedar, and concrete introduce changes in weight and texture without breaking the overall composure. The house’s interest is in how those materials meet the long roof planes. A shaded recess can be as important to the elevation as the wall beside it.

This is a useful shift in the collection’s geography. Designing near Reno asks different questions from designing deep in an alpine forest. Amos invites readers to begin with exposure, shade, and the horizon when thinking about a foothill house. The photographs suggest those priorities clearly; actual comfort and energy use would need a separate account from the occupants. The design intention is worth studying on its own terms.
