Dennis E. Zirbel Architect

The TDR reading / Architecture review

The boulder has a job

A familiar cabin vocabulary gets an unexpectedly structural twist.

A granite boulder supporting a beam is a detail worth stopping for. In Dennis Zirbel’s Martis Camp house, the rock also helps divide the shared interior. It gives a material usually associated with scenery a direct role in the room.

Gabled roofs and reclaimed wood establish a familiar mountain language, while steel at the fireplace adds a sharper note. Large openings connect the shared spaces to several outdoor areas. The result offers plenty to look at, with the structural stone providing a particularly memorable anchor.

The risk in a richly textured house is that every detail becomes a separate attraction. This one is most convincing where a material has a clear purpose: holding something up, marking an edge, or connecting spaces. That is an appealing test for rustic design. Choose the piece you love, then ask it to do architectural work. Character becomes more persuasive when it participates in the plan.
