The TDR reading / Architecture review

The long way home

At Analog House, the route between rooms earns its place in the plan.

A hallway is usually where a house loses square footage. At Analog House, it is where the architecture gathers momentum. The glazed connection winds past trees and an internal courtyard, making the trip from one room to another part of the reason to be here.

The collaboration between Olson Kundig and Faulkner Architects gives this forest setting a distinctly tactile vocabulary: concrete, steel, and details operated by hand. Those mechanisms invite attention to the building as something people use. They also suit a house whose plan repeatedly brings its occupants back into contact with the site.

There is a tradeoff in a plan that takes the scenic route: more circulation needs to justify itself. Here, the published arrangement makes a persuasive case. For anyone planning a home, the question is wonderfully practical: what will you see on the walk from your bedroom to the kitchen? That everyday view deserves design time.

A collaborative home for Greg and Lesa Faulkner.
