The room without a roof

CAMPout gives its courtyard a starring role in family life.

The name sets a high bar. A house called CAMPout ought to offer something of the pleasure of sleeping close to the ground and gathering outdoors. Faulkner’s answer begins with the plan: sleeping spaces tuck into the slope around a court, while a concrete gathering pavilion opens toward the wider landscape.

That arrangement creates two scales of outdoor life. There is the contained space close to the bedrooms, and there is the long view beyond the shared rooms. Basalt, cedar, and steel keep the material palette grounded in the forest setting without asking every surface to look rustic.

The courtyard is the part worth borrowing. Giving outdoor space a definite shape can make it feel like a destination, with rooms arranged around its daily use. It also demands discipline: every wing has to contribute to the enclosure. CAMPout’s appeal lies in taking that outdoor room seriously from the start.
