Magnin Architecture
Courtyard and glazed living spaces
A tough shell, a quieter center
Magnin uses a courtyard to bring an exposed site down to a domestic scale.
Corrugated metal gives Hajduk Residence a blunt, workmanlike first impression. The roof and walls read as a related enclosure, keeping the number of exterior moves under control. Then the courtyard changes the conversation: the house gathers around a smaller piece of outdoors.
At 2,600 square feet, the project has enough room to make that inward turn without becoming a sprawling compound. Snow, wind, and wildfire concerns inform the design, but the most accessible idea is spatial. A house can choose the scale of landscape it engages with, from a distant view to a protected place close at hand.
The contrast between the tough exterior and the court gives the composition its character. It also poses a useful question for an exposed site: where would you actually want to sit outside? Answer that before positioning every room toward the biggest view. A well-placed outdoor room may organize the whole house.
