Leave room for the rock

At Crystal Bay, the spaces between buildings deserve a closer look.

Lake Tahoe Cabins treats a substantial residence as a collection of parts. Three volumes work their way across the steep site, with a glazed connection bending around granite. That bend is a telling decision: an existing feature gets to alter the route through the house.

The gaps between the buildings create pockets of outdoor space, each with its own relationship to the slope and water. Breaking up the program gives the eye more than one distance to read. There is the immediate rock, the next building, and the lake beyond.

At 5,500 square feet combined, these are hardly tiny cabins. Their interest lies in how the size is distributed. Smaller pieces can produce a more intimate relationship to difficult ground, though the connecting spaces must earn their keep. The strongest invitation here is to draw the spaces between buildings as carefully as the buildings themselves.

Lead architects include Zac Rockett and Jason Ro. Landscape: Design Workshop. Construction: SierraCon.
