A framework for looking closer.
Our long-form features will connect the visible architecture to the decisions behind it. The current collection offers source-based architectural reviews; these questions guide the interviews and deeper reporting to follow.
01 / Read the site
Where does the house sit, and why? Look for the relationship between access, slope, vegetation, privacy, and outdoor rooms.
02 / Read the plan
What organizes movement, gathering, and retreat? A clear plan can make a modest home feel generous or give a large house intimacy.
03 / Ask about climate
How are snow, sun, wind, wildfire exposure, and water addressed? We distinguish the design intent from performance supported by records or lived experience.
04 / Follow a detail
Examine one meaningful junction, material, or construction choice. Invite the architect, builder, or craftsperson to explain the tradeoffs.
05 / Take something away
Identify an idea readers can carry into their own thinking, including its constraints. A good lesson is more useful than a universal prescription.
